‘Society of the Snow’ is the true story of flight 571 that crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. It’s a more faithful adaptation of the film ‘Alive’, with the cast being played by real Uruguayans. And while we all know the story of the extreme measures taken by the survivors in order to stay alive, this Netflix original is still absolutely harrowing. This film seems intensely personal, like you’re right there with these isolated souls, which is a testament to the acting because not one actor seemed like they were. But it’s a hard watch and demands a lot of the viewer, such as empathy, and that’s difficult considering what these tragic figures resorted to. Still, with remarkable cinematography and a moving score, ‘Society of the Snow’ is a brutally realistic portrayal of a terrifying disaster that will be remembered for generations.
